Freelance writing is one of the easiest and most popular ways of earning on the internet. Unlike other ways to earn online, you do not need any special skills , experience or equipment. In many regions, it is difficult to get a DSL or other broadband connection due to the poor connectivity, and in such areas, writing is often the best earning option.
Many large newspapers and magazine have fairly high standards of what kind of articles are acceptable and payment is usually made after the article is published. However, most online publications do not have such rigorous standards. As long as the article is grammatically correct and does not have any spelling mistakes, the writer is usually paid. The pay depends on the website on which it is published. High profile websites will pay $0.1 or more per word while smaller websites may expect a 500 word article to be written for 2 or 3 dollars.
Getting writing assignments is not very difficult. You can bid for work at freelance marketplaces like GetaFreelancer, Guru , search for writers wanted postings at Craigslist. Many Webmaster forums have a section on content creation.

Surveys are another very popular method of earning extra money online. All genuine survey companies do not charge for being invited for surveys, as most of them have a referral program, where you are paid for referring your friends and acquaintances for taking surveys. The so called “paid surveys” , which charge a joining fee, are usually compilations of the free surveys available.
Unlike freelance writing , earnings from surveys will depends on your profile, background and geographic locations. Since surveys are part of the market research usually conducted by consumer goods companies, people who sign up at a survey company will receive different types of surveys and the frequency will also differ. A person whose family income is higher will receive a larger number of surveys, since they are more likely to purchase a larger quantity of expensive consumer products.
Most surveys are open only to residents of USA, Canada and Europe, though for some software related products with global buyers, international users may also participate. Local survey companies usually pay by check or PayPal. Processing of survey payments usually takes some time, so it is advisable to maintain proper records.

Jobs which do not require much personal interaction with a lot of other people are more likely to be done remotely. Though employees are expected to keep the information confidential, they do not perform any critical task. Many companies divide the jobs into 2 categories - those which have to be done by their employees in office and tasks which can completed remotely by their employees or independent contractors.
Work where the employee does not need too many inputs like teaching or writing can be done at home, without affecting the quality of the work. Some of the popular work at home jobs are:
1. Customer service work at home jobs - a land line telephone connection is needed.
2. Freelance writing , proofreading, internet research
3. General, medical and legal transcription.
4. Verification of data
5. Data conversion, online data entry
6. Web design, programming

With the widespread availability of high speed internet connections, the number of people working from home has increased rapidly. Some people have conventional full time jobs with large companies which allow them the flexibility to work from home, while others work with companies that specialise in hiring telecommute employees or independent contractors.
Unlike conventional jobs, where an employee is expected to be in office for a fixed number of hours every day, most work at home jobs offer flexible timings for employees. The employee is usually compensated based on the amount and quality of the work done. The work to be done is usually sent by email or can be downloaded from the companies website. When the work is completed, it is uploaded or sent by email again. However, for some work at home jobs like data entry , which is subcontracted to local vendors, a business may drop off and pick up the documents.
The disadvantage of work at home jobs is that there is little control over how the data is used. In many industries, information has to be kept confidential, and since there is little control over how the employee uses the data at his or her home, the work cannot be completed remotely.
